Before building a structure, one needs to lay a foundation. For any musician, part of the foundation is the work of musicians who came before. Another part is the life experiences, memorable people, places, recurring thoughts, and emotions - all of the many things lurking somewhere beyond the reach of the conscious mind until they reveal themselves in improvisation, where one on one with the instrument you have nothing to hide. For five spring nights at Marsalis jazz club in Taipei, I was exploring these emotions, thoughts and influences, together with the piano and the audience. This album is a result of these explorations - not yet a structure, but a foundation - Album Zero.
